The Household Spending Indicator provides data on both monthly and quarterly household spending. The monthly notes highlight developments in the value of consumer spending across industry groups and states, while the quarterly notes contain additional information about real (price-adjusted) household spending.

Household spending rose a seasonally adjusted 1.0% in November (mkt exp 0.6%), with October’s gain revised up to 1.4% from 1.3%. The annual growth rate accelerated 0.6ppts to a more than two-year high of 6.3%.

Household spending rose a seasonally adjusted 1.3% in October, more than double the 0.6% expected by the markets. The increase in October was broad-based, with gains registered in goods and services as well as discretionary and essential items.

Household spending rose by a seasonally adjusted 0.2% in September, half of the 0.4% expected by the consensus. In quarterly terms, the household spending indicator volumes also rose by 0.2%. While the shift to illegal cigarette sales dragged on the figures for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, growth in household spending volumes slowed also excluding this category.

Household spending ticked up by a seasonally adjusted 0.1% in August, missing market expectations of a 0.3% gain. The slight increase in August came as a 0.5% gain in spending for services was almost entirely offset by a 0.2% fall in goods spending. Looking through the month-to-month volatilities, the trend in household spending growth slowed by 0.1ppts to a moderate 0.3%.
Retail Trade is discontinued
As of 1 August 2025, the Retail Trade publication has been replaced by the Household Spending Indicator as the Australian Bureau of Statistics' monthly report on consumer spending. Previous editions are available on the Retail Trade page.
