In April 2020, retail sales fell by 17.7% MoM in seasonally-adjusted terms, which was the largest drop on record.

The broad-based drop was triggered by business closures and other social distancing measures imposed to contain the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic. It more than offset the 8.5% surge in March sparked by panic buying ahead of the partial lockdown.
